ERP for Retail Chains: Stores, Stock, and Replenishment

Retail chains lose availability when each store orders from intuition and head office sees stock after the decision is already late. Compare central warehouse availability, planned receipts, and excess at other stores after protecting their own expected demand and display requirement. Handle promotions, returns, and store exceptions

Promotion planning should connect eligible stores, products, dates, expected uplift assumption, allocated stock, and exit plan. Returns need a condition and disposition before stock becomes saleable. A store closure, local event, damaged display, supply delay, or sudden demand change may justify override. Record the original recommendation, final decision, operator, and reason so later review distinguishes a weak formula from a valid local decision.

Review service and inventory outcomes together

Measure availability or lost-sale signals alongside days of supply, aging, markdown, transfer frequency, supplier performance, and adjustment rate. A high stock level can hide poor allocation, while aggressive reductions can create empty shelves. Review by SKU-store segment because fast movers, seasonal items, and long-tail products need different policies. Improve master data and process discipline before adding more sophisticated forecasting, since automation amplifies the quality of its inputs.

Run a regular policy review that compares recommendations with planner overrides, actual receipts, transfers, stockouts, markdowns, and count variance. Assign recurring exceptions to purchasing, store operations, merchandising, supplier management, or system ownership. Review whether pack sizes, lead times, display minimums, promotion dates, and store calendars remain correct. This closes the learning loop and prevents a local workaround from becoming a permanent shadow replenishment process today.
